  • Preference — remembering saved opportunities, filters, and display settings.
  • Analytics — understanding which opportunities and pages are most useful.
  • Advertising — used by Google AdSense and its partners to serve and measure ads.

Google AdSense. This Site displays advertising through Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-5162120248027866). Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. 7. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • Service providers — hosting, email delivery, analytics, customer support and security vendors who process data on our instructions and under confidentiality obligations.
  • Advertising partners — Google AdSense and its authorised vendors, as described in Section 6.
  • Public display — anything you post publicly in The City feed, including your display name, profile photo and post content, is visible to other users and may be indexed by search engines.
  • Testimonials — where you have consented, your name, photo, institution and quote may appear on the Site or in our marketing.
  • Legal and safety — where required by law, court order, or a competent regulator, or where necessary to investigate fraud, protect our rights, or protect the safety of our users.
  • Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring or sale of assets, subject to this policy continuing to apply.

Important: When you click through to an external opportunity, application portal, university, employer or funder website, you leave UpportuCity. We do not transmit your personal information to those organisations. Any data you submit to them is governed by their own privacy policies.

8. International Transfers

Our servers and service providers may be located outside your country of residence, including outside Nigeria. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we take reasonable steps to ensure an adequate level of protection through appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or transfers to jurisdictions recognised as providing adequate protection.

9. Data Retention

We keep personal information only as long as necessary:

  • Account and profile data — for as long as your account is active, and up to 12 months after you request deletion (to handle disputes and prevent re-registration abuse).
  • Community posts — until you delete them or your account is deleted; anonymised copies may remain where a thread's context would otherwise be broken.
  • Newsletter records — until you unsubscribe, plus a suppression record so we do not email you again.
  • Contact enquiries — up to 24 months after resolution.
  • Server logs and analytics — typically up to 24 months, often in aggregated or de-identified form.

10. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
  • Delete your account and associated personal data
  • Object to or restrict certain processing, including profiling for advertising
  • Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing already carried out
  • Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
  • Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@upportucity.com with the subject line "Data Request". We will respond within 30 days. We may ask you to verify your identity before acting on a request.

Nigerian users: you may lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). EU/UK users: you may complain to your national data protection authority.

Unsubscribing: every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link, which takes effect immediately. You will still receive essential service emails relating to your account.

11. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed password storage, access controls limiting who on our team can view user data, and CSRF protection on forms.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for all activity under your account. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at hello@upportucity.com.

12. Children's Privacy

UpportuCity is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you are under 16, please do not register or submit personal information. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 16 without verified parental consent, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who believe their child has provided us with personal data should contact hello@upportucity.com.

13. Third-Party Links

The Site contains extensive links to third-party websites, including funders, universities, employers, application portals and social platforms. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of every site you visit, especially before entering personal or financial information into an application form.

14. Automated Decision-Making

We do not make decisions producing legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing. We do use automated systems to rank, recommend and filter opportunities and to flag suspicious content for human review.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. If the changes are material, we will notify registered users by email or by a prominent notice on the Site before they take effect. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
