Sloan Research Fellowships 2027 in USA & Canada | $75,000 Research Grant

Outstanding early-career researchers in the United States and Canada are invited to seek nomination for the Sloan Research Fellowships 2027. Offered by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the fellowship recognizes exceptional young scientists and scholars whose creativity, innovation, and research achievements demonstrate strong potential to become future leaders in their fields.

Each selected fellow receives a US$75,000 research grant over a two-year fellowship period to support their research activities. Unlike many fellowship programmes, the Sloan Research Fellowships do not accept direct applications. Candidates must be nominated by an eligible department head or senior researcher at their institution.

The fellowship supports fundamental research across multiple scientific disciplines and has become one of the most prestigious awards for early-career faculty in North America.

The Sloan Research Fellowships recognize outstanding early-career faculty members whose independent research demonstrates originality, creativity, and the potential to make lasting contributions to science and scholarship.

Each year, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation selects researchers who have already established a record of significant scientific achievement while showing exceptional promise for future leadership within their disciplines.

The fellowship provides flexible research funding that enables recipients to advance their research programmes, build stronger research teams, acquire equipment, travel for scientific collaboration, and pursue innovative research projects.

Successful fellows will receive:

• US$75,000 research grant paid as a single lump sum
• Two years of research funding support
• Funding for research staff and assistants
• Laboratory and research expenses
• Scientific equipment purchases
• Professional and research travel
• Summer salary support
• Recognition as a Sloan Research Fellow

Note: Fellowship funds cannot be used for institutional overhead or indirect costs.

Applications are accepted from researchers working in:

Chemistry

• Computer Science
• Earth System Science
• Economics
• Mathematics
• Neuroscience
• Physics
• Eligible interdisciplinary fields related to the above disciplines

Candidates must:

• Hold a PhD or an equivalent doctoral degree.
• Be employed as faculty at a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada.
• Hold a tenure-track appointment but remain untenured as of 15 September 2026.
• Have regular teaching responsibilities as part of their faculty appointment.
• Demonstrate outstanding independent research accomplishments and leadership potential.

Self-nominations are not permitted.

To be considered, candidates must be nominated by a department head or another senior researcher.

Each nomination package should include:

• Nomination letter from the department chair or senior researcher
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Complete publication list
• Two representative research papers
• One-page research statement outlining significant research achievements and future research plans
• Three independent letters of support, preferably from researchers at different institutions

Letters of support are most effective when written by researchers who can objectively evaluate the nominee's work rather than close collaborators or former mentors.

Applications are reviewed by independent selection committees made up of distinguished scientists in each eligible discipline.

Selection is based on:

• Originality of research
• Independent scientific accomplishments
• Research excellence
• Creativity and innovation
• Potential for leadership within the scientific community

Researchers cannot apply directly for the Sloan Research Fellowships.

Eligible candidates must first be nominated by their department chair or another qualified senior researcher, who will submit the nomination through the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation's official online nomination portal.
