ABOUT THE WORLD BANK GROUP PIONEER INTERNSHIP
The Pioneer Internship is designed to provide practical work experience for postgraduate students who want to build careers in environmental sustainability, international development, and development finance.
Successful interns will join IFC's Environmental & Social team in Lagos, supporting investment operations across Nigeria, West Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. Throughout the internship, participants will work closely with environmental and social specialists to assess project risks, monitor compliance with international sustainability standards, analyze portfolio performance, and support reporting activities.
The internship offers a unique opportunity to understand how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles are applied within one of the world's largest development finance institutions while gaining valuable experience working on projects with real economic and social impact.
INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Interns will contribute to several aspects of IFC's Environmental & Social operations, including:
Environmental and Social Due Diligence
Participants will assist the Environmental & Social team in evaluating investment projects before financing decisions are made. Responsibilities may include:
- Reviewing Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs)
- Examining Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS)
- Assessing projects against IFC Performance Standards
- Preparing technical inputs for internal sustainability platforms such as ESG360 and ESGDocs
Portfolio Monitoring and Project Supervision
Interns will help monitor projects after financing has been approved to ensure ongoing compliance with environmental and social commitments. Activities may include:
- Tracking Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs)
- Reviewing Annual Monitoring Reports (AMRs)
- Supporting supervision missions across multiple African countries
- Monitoring project performance and identifying areas requiring follow-up
Data Analytics and Sustainability Reporting
The internship also includes analytical responsibilities aimed at strengthening environmental and social risk management. Interns may:
- Analyze portfolio data to identify emerging environmental and social risks
- Prepare monthly management reports
- Support data visualization and reporting activities
- Assist in improving portfolio tracking systems and performance monitoring
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Be a national of a World Bank Group member country.
- Nigerian applicants and other candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa are especially encouraged to apply.
- Be currently enrolled in, or in the final year of, a Master's degree programme.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, International Development, Natural Sciences, or another closely related discipline.
- Have at least two years of relevant professional experience before or alongside postgraduate studies.
- Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English.
- Knowledge of French is considered an added advantage.
