Up to 16 shortlisted innovators will participate in an eight-month tailored commercialization programme, receive two fully funded training weeks in the United Kingdom and a major African city, and compete for prize funding of up to £50,000.

Since its launch, the Africa Prize has supported 165 businesses across 22 African countries, helping entrepreneurs transform engineering ideas into scalable businesses. According to the Royal Academy of Engineering, 71% of Africa Prize alumni are currently generating revenue, while alumni businesses have collectively raised over $39 million in grants and equity funding.

Unlike many innovation competitions that only provide financial awards, the Africa Prize combines funding with a comprehensive package of business development support. Participants receive intensive commercialization training, engineering mentorship, strategic communications support, and opportunities to connect with investors, industry leaders, and fellow innovators.

The programme welcomes applications from both engineers and non-engineers, provided the innovation is engineering-based and has progressed beyond the idea stage into the early stages of commercialization. Many promising African engineering innovations struggle to move beyond the prototype stage because of limited access to funding, business expertise, mentorship, and international networks. The Africa Prize addresses these challenges by helping entrepreneurs refine both the technical and commercial aspects of their innovations.

Selected participants gain practical skills in business growth, product commercialization, investment readiness, leadership, and communication while becoming part of one of Africa's most respected engineering entrepreneurship networks.

 The Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027 offers much more than prize funding. The Africa Prize is seeking ambitious entrepreneurs from Sub-Saharan Africa who have developed engineering-based solutions that address local sustainable development challenges.

Applications are welcome from both engineers and non-engineers, provided the innovation is engineering-based and meets the programme's eligibility requirements.

Applicants must:

• Apply either as an individual or on behalf of a team.
• Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country. For team applications, the lead applicant (the person participating in the programme) must be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country.
• Be ordinarily resident in Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants temporarily living abroad for study or similar reasons may still apply.
• Be 18 years or older when applications close.
• Demonstrate a high level of English proficiency, as the entire programme and application process are conducted in English.
• Not be an Africa Prize alumnus, nor apply with the same innovation or business that has previously participated in the programme.
• Not be employed by an industrial research establishment, as these are not eligible.
• Not be an alumnus of the Royal Academy of Engineering's Advance Programme or a Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) completed after June 2024.

Applicants who completed the Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) before June 2024 may still be eligible if they clearly demonstrate why participation in the Africa Prize will provide additional value to them and their business.

To qualify, the proposed innovation must:

• Be based in a Sub-Saharan African country.
• Be an engineering-based product, technology, or service.
• Be beyond the ideation stage and already in the early stages of commercialization.
• Deliver social and/or environmental benefits within Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Demonstrate strong potential for replication and scale.
• Be supported by a realistic and commercially viable business plan.

The innovation may be:

• A completely new technology.
• An adaptation of an existing technology.

• The first application of an existing technology in a new market.

  Applicants must also provide:

• A technical diagram illustrating the engineering aspects of the innovation.
• A photograph of the innovation.
• Where applicable, a letter of consent from intellectual property originators or collaborators.

Eligible innovations may come from a wide range of engineering disciplines, including:

• Agricultural Engineering (Agri-tech)
• Biotechnology
• Chemical Engineering

• Computer Science
• Design Engineering
• Electrical and Electronic Engineering
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

• Medical Engineering

The Royal Academy of Engineering provides guidance on what qualifies as an innovation in the early stages of commercialisation.

For Hardware-Based Innovations

Applicants should have:

• Built one or more working prototypes demonstrating the technical concept.
• Refined the design for initial commercial production.
• Realistic manufacturing cost and production timelines.
• Evidence that potential customers are interested in the innovation and that it has begun generating market traction.

For Software-Based Innovations

Applicants should have:

• Developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with demonstrable functionality.
• Evidence that the product is attracting users or customers and has the potential to generate sustainable revenue.

During Stage One, applicants will be required to submit:

• A completed online application.
• A current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
• Technical documentation describing the innovation.
• Photographs of the innovation.
• Videos showcasing the innovation (where applicable).
• Supporting documents demonstrating eligibility.
• A technical diagram of the innovation.
• A letter of consent from intellectual property collaborators or originators, where relevant.

Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the official Application Guidance Notes before beginning their application to ensure all required documents are included.

Applications for the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027 are submitted through the Academy's online Grant Management System.

Stage One

All eligible applicants begin with Stage One.

At this stage, applicants will:

• Read the official Application Guidance Notes.
• Register on the Grant Management System.
• Select Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2026/2027 - Stage One.
• Complete the online application.
• Upload all required supporting documents before the deadline.

The Stage One application focuses on:

• Your background.
• Your engineering innovation.
• Team information.
• Technical viability.
• Basic eligibility.

Each eligible application is independently reviewed by two technical experts from the Royal Academy of Engineering's network.

The highest-scoring applicants will be longlisted and invited to proceed to Stage Two.

Stage Two: Business Assessment

Only longlisted applicants will be invited to complete Stage Two of the application process.

This stage is more detailed and focuses on the commercial potential of the innovation. Applicants will be required to provide information on:

• Business plan.
• Market analysis.
• Financial projections.
• Commercialisation strategy.
• Growth potential and long-term sustainability.

Stage Two applications are reviewed by the Royal Academy of Engineering's panel of expert judges.

Successful applicants will be shortlisted for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027 and invited to join the Academy's eight-month business acceleration programme.

The Africa Prize follows a two-stage assessment process designed to evaluate both the technical quality of the innovation and its commercial potential.

Stage One - Technical Assessment

During the first stage:

• Applications are reviewed to confirm eligibility.
• Two independent technical experts assess each eligible innovation.
• The assessment focuses on the technological viability, engineering credibility, innovation, and potential impact of the proposed solution.
• The highest-scoring applicants are longlisted and invited to proceed to Stage Two.

Stage Two - Business Assessment

Longlisted applicants are invited to submit additional business information for evaluation.

The judging panel considers:

• Commercial viability.
• Market opportunity.
• Financial sustainability.
• Business growth strategy.
• Potential for scale and long-term impact across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Following this assessment, up to 16 innovators are selected to participate in the Africa Prize programme.

The Royal Academy of Engineering will host a series of online information sessions to help prospective applicants understand the application process, eligibility requirements, and what makes a strong application.

Applicants can register for any of the following sessions:

• 23 July 2026 - 11:00–12:00
• 12 August 2026 - 13:00–14:00
• 25 August 2026 - 11:00–12:00

These sessions provide an opportunity to ask questions directly to the Africa Prize team before submitting an application.
