ABOUT THE WORLD BANK GROUP PIONEER INTERNSHIP

The World Bank Group Pioneer Internship provides talented graduate students with opportunities to gain professional experience while contributing to projects that support sustainable economic development.

Hosted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, this internship places participants within the Environmental & Social team responsible for ensuring that IFC-supported projects meet global sustainability standards.

The Environmental & Social team plays an important role in identifying and managing potential risks associated with investments, including environmental impacts, community concerns, social protections, and sustainability requirements.

Through this internship, selected candidates will gain insight into how international development institutions use research, data analysis, and environmental safeguards to support responsible investments.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Selected interns will support IFC's Environmental & Social operations through the following responsibilities:

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL DUE DILIGENCE

Interns will assist in evaluating investment projects to ensure they align with IFC environmental and social requirements.

Key activities may include:

  • Supporting the screening of investment transactions against IFC Performance Standards.
  • Reviewing Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs).
  • Assessing Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS).
  • Preparing information and documentation for IFC's internal ESG platforms, including ESG360 and ESGDocs.
  • Supporting research and analysis related to environmental and social risk management.

PORTFOLIO MONITORING AND PROJECT SUPERVISION

Interns will contribute to monitoring IFC-supported projects and tracking compliance with sustainability commitments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) implementation.
  • Reviewing Annual Monitoring Reports (AMRs).
  • Supporting supervision activities for projects across Nigeria, Central Africa, and Southern Africa.
  • Identifying areas where additional environmental or social support may be required.

DATA ANALYTICS AND REPORTING

The internship also focuses on using data to strengthen decision-making and risk identification.

Interns will:

  • Analyze environmental and social portfolio trends.
  • Prepare monthly Environmental & Social management reports.
  • Identify emerging risks through portfolio data analysis.
  • Support reporting processes used by IFC teams.

Academic Requirements
